Last year I created a seven-course dinner to ring in 2007. But when I tallied the nutritional information, I realized I was serving my guests a meal that weighed in at well over 3,000 calories. Yikes!

Just wanna have fun at parties, but don’t wanna dread getting on the scale in January? It is possible — and you don’t have to be a nutritional saint while everyone else is partying like rock stars. An indulgence here and there won’t derail a healthy diet. In fact, you’d...
The other day I was shopping at Whole Foods and I spied one of my favorite springtime delicacies: fiddlehead ferns. If you have access to a good produce store, you've probably seen these strange-looking greens; they're flat, tight coils, wrapping around tiny budding leaves.

Fiddlehead ferns always remind me of a trip to Alaska I took four years ago. It was memorable because I got engaged during that trip, but I'll also never forget the tiny reindeer sausage stand that we came across in the...
Food has moved around the world since Europeans brought tea from China,
but never at the speed or in the amounts it has over the last few
years. Consumers in not only the richest nations but, increasingly, the
developing world expect food whenever they crave it, with no concession
to season or geography.
One thing Americans love is a celebration, so when May 5 comes around, we welcome it with a snap of our fingers, a toss of a Margarita and a resounding olé! Popular lore holds that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. Rather it commemorates a fateful event in 1862, when the Mexican army demolished the invading French cavalry. Thus we celebrate with tortillas instead of crepes.

Our south of the border neighbors are known for spicy, flavorful cooking, and Americans...
The first of my mommy-friends are starting to have their second babies, so the rest of us are mobilizing the forces and descending upon their households bearing meals. And I never know what to prepare for these occasions. Does her family have any food allergies or aversions? Will they eat the meal right away, or will they freeze it? And, most importantly, are there certain foods or nutrients that a new mother should be eating?

I can't recall what I myself ate in the weeks following the birth...
Like many of us, my husband's a sucker for a good marketing ploy. Which is why, in the supermarket produce department the other day, he picked up a plastic clamshell container and asked if we could buy it. The container encased four red apples, but the label identified them as Sweet Grapples®... "Looks like an apple. Tastes like a grape."

Even within the natural food movement’s inner core, Raw foodists can’t get no love. Tell most folks you limit your diet to just fresh, uncooked fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, and responses range from bewildered admiration (“Wow. You do that?!? I could never deal”) to bemused skepticism (“uh, whatever floats your boat, I guess”) to snark bordering on hostility (“what are you, a f’ing rabbit?”). Even the possibility of “increased energy and vitality” — the...
